¡¡¡¡C ring seals, which consist of a flexible metal C ring coated with a soft metal and sandwiched between two surfaces, may be used to seal pressurized systems. The seals are nominally stationary in these applications. However, because of thermal mismatches between the various materials used with some systems, small-amplitude motions can result from thermal changes. Consequently, the wear characteristics of such seals are of interest.

¡¡¡¡To address this, an empirical study of lead-coated and indium-coated rings was carried out to determine the predominant mode of wear and the influence of certain design parameters on this wear. The tests developed to study the wear phenomena involved are discussed here together with the principal results of the study.

¡¡¡¡It was concluded that the primary wear mode for small-amplitude motions is a flow process of the lead and the indium. This wear was found to be influenced by the roughness of the mating surfaces, compression of the C ring and the direction and amplitude of the motions.
